Member - Robb MetcalfeAlthough Robb’s first flight was in a DC3 from Blackpool to the Isle of Man at the age of seven, his real interest in flying started when he joined the Air Training Corps. His first Chipmunk flight, under the Air Experience Scheme, convinced him that his future career would be as a pilot. After soloing on the Kirby Cadet Mk 3 he gained his Private Pilots’ Licence through the ATC Flying Scholarship Scheme.

After leaving school, Robb joined the RAF and trained on the JP 3 & 4 and the Varsity – his first experience of Historic Aircraft – before converting to the Vulcan Mk2. Subsequently he converted to the Queen of the Skies, the English Electric Canberra, on which he remained for more or less the rest of his RAF career.

Robb has flown most marks Canberra but never the aircraft he most wanted fly when he joined the RAF, the Canberra B(I)8. However, on retirement he part owned and displayed an ex-100 Squadron Canberra TT18, the aircraft having been on 100 Squadron when Robb was Squadron Boss.

After taking early retirement from the RAF he joined the CAA initially in their Aerodrome Standards Department before moving to the General Aviation Department. On leaving the CAA he was the Authority’s senior GA specialist responsible for all aspects of GA from balloons to model aircraft, corporate aircraft to air displays and the operation of ex-military types on the UK civil register.

He has flown well over 100 types during his career including many historic types. Robb is a CRI, a CAA Display Pilot Examiner, a Tiger Club Check Pilot and an LAA Coach. He holds a current Display Authorisation and is an active display pilot flying primarily First World War types with the Great War Display Team.
